Domestic helpers to make more money

Minister Myles stated that he and his government will be implementing the recommendation of the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee (MWAC), which calls for a new minimum wage of $8.75 KYD per hour.
Minister Myles stated that he and his government will be implementing the recommendation of the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee (MWAC) which calls for a new minimum wage of $8.75 KYD per hour.
Important to note is that the MWAC also calls for no exemptions, in other words this new increase is to be implemented in all sectors, and the report specifically stated that it is to be done for Domestic Helpers.
If the Government proceeds as planned, this means Caymanians who now employ a Helper from say 7am until 5pm Monday to Friday will have to pay approximately 1,750 per month starting in January of 2026...if they provide room and board for their Helpers then that number would reduce by 1.50 per hour for a total of 1,450 per month.
Is this really feasible, is minimum wage really going to help Caymanian families who are already struggling to make ends meet? With such an increase in your expenditures, will you demand a salary increase also, and if you do will you get it? Minimum wage doesnt help anyone, it only drives up the cost of living.

Ministers in our government today might not see a problem with this increase, but thats understandable because (according to 2022 data) they each make a comfortable salary of $304,500 KYD per annum, whilst the average Caymanian earns $60,000 a year.
We need real solutions Cayman. I thought we said Enough is Enough.
